    Biography

Some are calling Ames High, which has gone 53-0 the last two years and won back-to-back 4A state titles, the greatest boys’ basketball team in Iowa high school history.  Barnes, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward and a University of North Carolina recruit, is the main reason. Barnes was named Player of the Year by USA Today and earned Mr. Basketball honors from ESPN RISE – the first Iowa player to earn the honor in the award’s 56-year history – after averaging 26.1 points, 10 rebounds, 3.1 steals and three assists per game.

Barnes was named the state tournament MVP after averaging 19.7 points in three Ames double-digit tourney wins and the Little Cyclones (27-0) finished with a No. 3 ranking from USA Today and a No. 10 ranking from ESPN RISE. He also earned MVP honors in the McDonald’s All-American Game (18 points, 7-of-10 shooting, five rebounds) and the Jordan Brand Classic (20 points, 15 rebounds), and hit a three-pointer and led a fourth-quarter rally to help the USA Junior National Select team to victory in the Nike Hoop Summit.

Barnes was name as the ACC Rookie of the Year his freshman year as a Tar Heel. He then declared his intent to enter the 2012 NBA Draft, where he was the 7th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors. He was named to the NBA’s All Rookie team and was a member of the 2015 NBA Championship Team.

Barnes was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2016, where he played until 2019. Barnes was traded to the Sacramento Kings and signed a four year extension.

    Biography

It’s not often you see a 6-foot-5 setter, but Broekhuis is one of the best, in addition to her skills on the front line. Colorado Springs Christian School has now won six consecutive 3A state championships, and Broekhuis, playing for her father Mike, has been an integral part of the last four.

A two-time Gatorade Colorado Player of the Year selection, Broekhuis was named ESPN RISE Player of the Year after recording 465 kills, 411 assists, 40 blocks, 167 digs and 30 aces to lead the Lions to a perfect 30-0 record as a senior. “The plan today was the same as the previous days: one game at a time, it was only one more game.” -Dallas Escobedo

    Biography

Escobedo burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2007 when she led St. Mary’s to its first 5A Division 1 state championship, pitching a four-hitter and striking out 17 in an eight-inning 2-0 victory over Sierra Vista Buena High to earn Big School Player of the Year honors from the Arizona Republic. She finished that season with a 27-8 record, 16 shutouts, five no-hitters, a 0.73 ERA and 501 strikeouts in 260 innings. She broke that record this season, striking out 520 in leading the Lady Knights to the championship game. That included a 6-0 record at the MaxPreps Tournament of Champions, featuring a 12-inning perfect game with 21 strikeouts in a 4-0 championship win.   She struck out 172 in her first 10 wins.

St. Mary’s also advanced to the state semifinals her sophomore and junior seasons. As a sophomore, Escobedo pitched a perfect game, four no-hitters and nine one-hitters, also hitting .357 with eight home runs, 33 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. In 2011 the Sun Devils played in the college world series, where Escobedo helped them win the National Title. She was also picked to play on USA Softball’s Junior World Team, who won the gold medal at the Pan Am Games. She completed her college career with a record of 115-26 and had a of 1,222 strikeouts.

After college, Esobedo was the National Pro Fastpitch No. 1 draft pick in 2014 and continued to play professionally. She most recently qualified Mexico to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games.

“Being drafted was an unreal feeling. Going through the process was something no one can ever be prepared for.” -Drew Vettleson

    Biography

Ambidextrous since birth, the 6-foot-1 185-pounder is projected as an outfielder as a professional, but Vettleson is a rarity at any level: a switch-pitcher. He has been clocked at 93 miles per hour as a right-handed pitcher and 88 miles per hour as a lefty. The Gatorade Washington Player of the Year as a junior, Vettleson owned a career 6-3 record, 2.10 earned-run average and 64 strikeouts in 57 innings entering this year, as well as a .408 career batting average with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was named Player of the Year this spring by the Tacoma News-Tribune.

Vettleson hit two grand slams in a game against Tacoma Stadium High earlier this year, then struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 7-1 victory over Puyallup Emerald Ridge High that propelled the Cougars to a fourth straight state tournament berth. Rated No. 19 in Baseball America’s pre-season Top 100, Vettleson, committed to Oregon State University, should be selected in the first two rounds of the upcoming Major League draft.

Vettleson was indeed drafted in the first round as the 42nd overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays.

    Impact Statement

Henderson, a two sport athlete, was a dominant force on the football field for Cretin-Derham and then in the NFL.

    Biography

No football player stood head and shoulders above the rest this year, but at 6-foot-8 and 335 pounds, Henderson just might. Henderson comes from the same school that produced the NHSCA’s 2001 Baseball Senior Athlete of the Year, Joe Mauer.

A long-time Minnesota football powerhouse, Cretin-Derham Hall finished 13-1 for the second straight year and won the 5A state title last fall with Henderson anchoring both lines, also finishing as the 2008 state runner-up. Henderson was named Offensive Player of the Year by USA Today, was Player of the Year on the All-State Team selected by The Associated Press and earned Player of the Year honors from the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He was one of seven finalists for the U.S. Army Player of the Year and played in the U.S. Army All-American Game.

Also an outstanding basketball player, Henderson averaged 14.1 points per game, and the Raiders started the season 10-0 when Henderson was in the lineup. Last summer Henderson was a teammate of Harrison Barnes, the NHSCA Boys Basketball Senior Athlete of the Year, on a summer AAU team.

Henderson played all four years while at USC. He was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference team Honorable Mention twice his last two years.

At the 2012 NFL Draft he was selected in seventh round by the Buffalo Bills, where he remained until 2018. He was then traded to the Houston Texans before being placed on the injury list.
