The inductees serve as tremendous role models for high school athletes. Their message is to employ the values and skills learned in athletics and apply them to your professional career.     Bowie is one of the most decorated coaches in Maryland history. His teams won a total of 41 State Tiles under his direction.

    Biography

    No Maryland girls coach has been more successful than Bowie. His team won the Class 2A-1A indoor track title this year, Bowie’s 16th indoor track title overall, and he was named Coach of the Year by the Washington Post. Six of his teams have scored state runner-up finishes.

    Bowie’s outdoor track teams have won 13 state titles, including 12 straight from 1981-92, to go along with five runner-up finishes. Bowie also coached the boys’ outdoor team to five state titles between 1976 and 1985 and he has won a total of 41 state titles in cross country and indoor and outdoor track.

    Impact Statement

    Galle and UMS-Wright are synonymous with winning. His teams, over his 50 year career, have captured 59 State Championships in Track & Field and Cross Country.

    Biography

    Galle’s teams have dominated Class 4A competition during his 34 years at UMS-Wright. This month his boys team won its ninth state title in the past 10 years, winning by 105.5 points, and his girls team won its seventh consecutive title.

    In all, 32 of his teams have won indoor and outdoor track state team titles, and eight of the athletes he has coached hold Alabama state records. He also has coached UMS-Wright’s cross country teams to five state titles, and 32 of his teams in the six disciplines have been state runners-up. A member of the UMS-Wright Hall of Fame, Galle was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame this year.

    Since being honored, Galle is still at the helm of UMS-Wright after 50 years. His boys’ teams have won 19 Alabama Outdoor State Championships, while his girls’ captured 15 Outdoor State Championships. For indoor track and field, his boys’ teams have won 9 and the girls have won 4.  In addition, his teams have claimed 5 Boys’ and 7 Girls’ Cross Country State Titles.

    In 2011 UMS-Wright’s track was renamed the Galle-Leatherbury Track.

    Michael Kypriss

    Biography

    Kypriss has coached nine state championship teams in a career spanning more than 20 seasons. Between 1987 and 1995, his girls’ teams at Miami Killian High won six Class 4A titles and added three state runner-up finishes. His boys’ teams were state champions in 1997 and 1998. In 1999 Kypriss moved on to Dr. Krop, with his boys’ team winning the 2004 state title. The boys’ and girls’ teams each have two runner-up finishes to their credit as well, and both teams have qualified for this month’s state team championships.

    Overall, his teams have combined for more than 850 victories. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association selected Kypriss as its Southeast Region Coach of the Year this year. Also the founder and owner of the Michael Kypriss Junior Tennis Academy, located in Aventura, FL., Kypriss was selected Florida Coach of the Year by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) in 1996 and was a USTA National Coach of the Year finalist in 1991.

    Since being honored, Kypriss lead Dr. Krop to prolonged success and is still leading the way. After 35 years of coaching, Kypriss boasts 16 state championships, 11 state runners-up finishes, 30 district and 24 regional titles.

    Tim Mang

    Coached teams to four CIF titles and 19 league championships over his 36 year career.

    Biography

    Mang is completing his 35th season as one of California’s most distinguished high school tennis coaches. The coach of Corona del Mar’s boys’ team since 1993, Mang’s teams have a dual-meet record of 282-38, nine league titles, and 12 consecutive appearances in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state team tournament, winning titles in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

    His 1998 team, which shared the state title, was ranked No. 4 nationally and his 1999 team No. 2.  Seven of his players became High School All-Americans. He also coached Corona del Mar’s girls’ team from 1995-98, with his 1997 team winning the CIF state title and finishing the season ranked No. 1 nationally.

    Mang began his coaching career at Huntington Beach Edison High, going 290-90 and winning nine league titles in 17 seasons. In 1982, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association named him its Western States Coach of the Year and its National Coach of the Year First Runner-up, as well as California Coach of the Year.

    In 2018 Mang was inducted into the National High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

    In addition to coaching, Mang created the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation (NHSTAAF). It's a non-profit corporation that he created to promote high school boys and girls tennis. In addition. the NHSTAAF also recognizes the most outstanding high school players and teams throughout the country.

    Biography

    Casadia is retiring this season after starting the school’s swimming program over 30 years ago and elevating it to state and national prominence. Casadia’s teams won six state team titles and his swimmers won 12 individual state championships and 28 state relay crowns. Twenty of his swimmers went on to become individual All-Americans and 16 became relay All-Americans.

    Casadia’s commitment to building strong teams produced 489 overall dual-meet wins- tops among New Jersey swimming coaches. His boys teams once won 205 consecutive conference meets and his girls teams won the final 61 dual meets of his career.

    In 2014 Vineland honored their successful coach by naming the pool after him.

    Brian Metheny

    Metheny boasts over 700 career wins coaching the boys and girls swim teams at Sunnyslope.

    Biography

    Metheny has been coaching for more than 30 years and has spent the last 24 building Sunnyslope’s boys’ and girls’ teams. His hard work came to fruition this year as the two teams swept the Class 4A, Division 2 boys’ and girls’ titles. With NHSCA National High School Girls Swimming Senior Athlete of the Year, Alexandra Clarke, leading the way, Sunnyslope edged Phoenix Arcadia High 375-356 for the girls title.

    The boys’ team nearly doubled the score of runner-up Cottonwood Mingus High, 443-233, as all three relay teams swam to victory. Prior to moving to Sunnyslope, Metheny coached Phoenix Washington High to four consecutive state titles from 1973-76.

    Since being honored, Metheny continued to lead Sunnyslope until his retirement in 2019 after 44 years of coaching. He had over 700 career dual-meet win, boys’ and girls’ teams combined. He was also inducted into the Sunnyslope Viking Hall of Fame in 2019.

    Biography

    Rountree’s 15th season at Douglas was a record-setting one. Her 2006 team finished 23-1-1 and won its fourth consecutive Class 6A state title, becoming the first public school to win four straight in Florida. Her career record is 392-58-32, with 332 of those victories coming at Douglas, and her teams have won 13 consecutive district titles and made 10 appearances in the state’s Final Four.

    The National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s South Region Division 1 Coach of the Year in 2005, Rountree was voted Coach of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers for the third time in four years.  She is the only coach to win the award in back-to-back years in its 14-year history.

    Since being honored in 2006, Rountree stepped down from coaching;  subsequently. In 2018, Rountree returned to Douglas and took over the team once again.

    Most recently Rountree led Douglas to the Regional Championships in 2020. Rountree has now amassed over 450 wins in her career. In the spring of 2021, she was named the Bun Sentinel Broward 7A-6A Coach of the Year.

    Pinkham has led an illustrious career as he coached Gilford to 24 state finals appearances and 15 State Titles.

    Biography

    In 29 years at the helm, Pinkham’s teams can be found both in the state and in the national record books. From 1990-97 Gilford won 133 consecutive games, a national high school record, and Pinkham directed Gilford to 10 consecutive state titles from 1987-96, also a national record.

    This year’s team finished 20-0 and won the Class M state title, Pinkham’s 13th at the school. His career record is 452-38-20. A member of the New Hampshire Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Pinkham was named the National High School Boys Soccer Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations in 2004.

    Since being honored Pinkham has continued his success at Gilford. Gilford won two more state championships in 2010 and 2015, and finished second in 2009.

    In 2016 Pinkham retired from his role as the Athletic Director but is continuing to lead his soccer team.

    Jim Garrett

    Impact Statement

    Garrett is third overall in Indiana history with 3 State Titles.

    Biography

    Garrett’s teams have taken the state’s girls’ golf world by storm during the decade. This year’s team won its second consecutive state team title and third in four years, setting state scoring records with a Day 2 score of 301 and a 36-hole tournament score of 314, winning the crown by 32 strokes. Penn was 11-0 during the season and also set a sectional scoring record.

    Garrett’s alma mater, Ball State University, has awarded him state High School Golf Coach of the Year honors for the past five years. Garrett also served as the District 2 Golf Committee representative for the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association during the 2003-04 school year.

    Since being honored in 2006, Garrett has continued to lead Penn Girls’ Golf. He is third overall in Indiana’s golf history with three state championships under his belt. Penn also took second at State in 2011 and 2013.

    After 43 years of coaching and teaching, Garrett retired from Penn in 2018.

    Marty Donlon

    Impact Statement

    Donlon led St. Xavier to 22 State Titles over 45 years. He was instrumental in Kentucky’s golf history by creating the KIT and the All Star Team program.

    Biography

    Donlon has been St. Xavier’s golf coach for more than 35 years and has led the Tigers to five state team titles in the past eight years, and 11 state crowns overall. His 2005 team finished third in state. Entering last season, Donlon’s teams had an overall meet record of 1,165-61 and had won eight consecutive region titles.

    A 1956 St. Xavier graduate, Donlon is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2003. He also serves as manager of the state golf tournament. In addition to his golf coaching duties, Donlon also was St. Xavier’s head basketball coach for 10 seasons and remains on the staff as an assistant coach.

    Since being honored Donlon led St. Xavier for the next two years before retiring in 2008. Over his career Donlon’s teams won 22 State Championships.

    He continued to head up the Kentucky All State Golf Teams until 2017. Donlon started the program in 1992. He also ran the Kentucky Invitational Tournament (KIT) for 55 years.

    In 2019 Donlon was inducted as part of the first class into the Kentucky’s Golf Coaches Association.

    Mark Logan led RHAM Regional High School to 19 straight Conference Titles and 6 State Championships during his coaching career.

    Biography

    Logan has coached RHAM’s girls’ cross country and track teams since 1981. His cross country teams have won four Class M state titles, in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997, and also have posted five state runner-up finishes. This year’s team finished fourth in state. The Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) voted Logan its Girls’ Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1992 and its Girls’ Track Coach of the Year in 1996.

    Logan served as CHSCA president during the 2003-04 school year. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association named him its National Girls’ Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2005.

    Since being honored in 2006, Logan’s teams went on to win 19th straight conference championships. RHAM also won two state championships (2007, 2016) and a state runner-up finish (2015).

    Logan retired in 2016 from a long career as a teacher and RHAM’s Athletic Director.

    Baker lead Hopi High School to a national record with 27 continuous State Championships.

    Biography

    Coaching in a culture which embraces the physical and spiritual benefits of running, Baker’s teams have been virtually perfect during his tenure. Since a state runner-up finish in 1989, Baker’s Hopi teams have won the past 16 state championships.

    After winning 11 straight Class A-2A state titles from 1990-2000, Hopi moved up to Class 3A in 2001 and continued to dominate, winning five more state crowns. For over a decade Baker also has coached the junior men’s teams that compete in national cross-country events for Wings of America, an American Indian youth development program established in 1988 to reach the most “at risk” population in the United States- American Indian youth.

    Since being honored in 2006, Coach Baker continues to lead Hopi High School and their state wide dominance. Hopi has won twenty-seven continuous championships, which is a national record, from 1990-2017.

    Bob Mackey

    Mackey has led Christ the King’s girls’ basketball team to 25 CHSAA State Championships over his career.

    Biography

    In seven years at the helm at Christ the King, Mackey has had about as good a run as anyone could imagine. His teams have an overall record of 183-13. This season Mackey led Christ the King to its second consecutive New York State Federation Class AA title and a second finish on the USA Today Girls Basketball Super 25. The newspaper also named Mackey its National Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Christ the King has won state, diocesan and league titles in each of Mackey’s seven seasons. Mackey serves as dean of boys at Christ the King.

    Since being honored, Mackey has continued to lead the girls of Christ the King and they continue their dominance in the state of New York. Mackey has led the girls to another four State Championships in 2008, 2010, 2018 and 2019. Mackey was the ALL-USA Coach of the Year in 2018.

    In addition to basketball, Mackey is also the volleyball coach. He is also the Athletic Director and a chemistry teacher.

    In March of 2020, his 2006 team was listed as second in MaxPreps Top 25 High School Girls’ Teams of All Time.

    Jack Keefer

    “When people think of Lawrence North, they think of Jack Keefer and they think of basketball, because he’s been so successful for so long,” -Mike Penrose, Athletic Director

    Biography

    Keefer has been a high school coach for 34 years, and few coaches have enjoyed a three-year run as successful. His Lawrence North team finished 29-0 and won its third consecutive Class 4A state title, a feat only two other schools in Indiana’s distinguished basketball history have matched. Lawrence North finished the season with a 45-game overall winning streak, tying the state record.

    Keefer’s team became the first Indiana school in the 25-year history of USA Today’s Boys Basketball Super 25 to finish the season ranked No. 1, and the newspaper also named Keefer its National Coach of the Year. His career record is 583-227 and his teams have won four state titles, six regional titles and 14 sectional titles.

    Since being honored in 2006, Keefer continues to lead Lawrence North.

    January 29,  2018 was a special night as Lawrence North High School named the gym in Keefer’s honor before the game.

    In December of 2019 Keefer recorded his 800th career victory.

    Biography

    Polz recently completed his 18th season as a head coach, and his 14th at Carl Sandburg. This season, he led the Eagles to a 33-0 record and their second consecutive Class AA dual-team state championship. In the individual state tournament Polz coached three state champions and five Eagles advanced to the finals, a Class AA record.

    Carl Sandburg currently boasts a 51-match winning streak over two seasons, and Polz’s last four teams have a combined record of 103-3 and have been unbeaten in the regular season against Illinois opponents. Polz also coached at New Lenox Providence High for four seasons, leading the Celtics to the 1989 Class AA title and a runner-up finish in 1990. His career dual-meet record is 400-45 and he has coached 13 individual state champions and 45 placewinners.

    Since being honored in 2006, Polz’ team won another state championship in 2007. He retired shortly after but has stayed on as an assistant coach, a position he still holds.

    In 2017 Polz was honored as the IWCOA Lifetime Achievement Award honoree.

    Crocco finished her legendary career after 40 years with over 1,100 wins and 18 State Championships.

    Biography

    In 38 years as a head coach Crocco built Cardinal Gibbons into a Florida volleyball powerhouse. She has led Cardinal Gibbons to 17 state titles, and her teams sported state title streaks of four, six and five straight. This year’s team was 28-2 and advanced to the Class 4A state quarterfinals, giving her a career record of 1,074-119- a winning percentage of more than 90 per cent. More than 100 of her players have earned college scholarships.

    Also the school’s athletic director, Crocco has been named Coach of the Year by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) 18 times. She was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 1998, and in 2005 became the first woman to be inducted into the FACA Hall of Fame. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association named her its National Coach of the Year in 1988.

    After 40 years in coaching,  Crocco retired from the sport she loved after the 2009 season. She boasts a fantastic accomplishment of 18 state team titles.

    Allen led Highland Park to four State Titles, accumulated over 375 wins and is the 4th winningest coach in the storied Texas football history.

    Biography

    Allen, also the athletic director at Highland Park, has been a football coach for over 25 years. Since arriving at Highland Park in 1999, his teams have an overall record of 80-9 and won the 2005 Class 4A state title, the school’s first state football title in 48 years. Highland Park finished 15-0, and its 59-0 championship-game victory over Marshall High was the most lopsided in state final history.

    Allen previously coached 19 seasons at Ballinger High, Brownwood High and his alma mater, Abilene Cooper High, leading Cooper to the state finals in 1996. His career record is 234-65-6. Inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor this year, Allen recently published a book about coaching: “Coaching by the Book: The Purpose and Passion of a High School Coach.”

    Since being honored, Allen has led Highland Park to it’s fourth title under his direction. The Scots won a three state championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

    In 2017 Allen was selected as the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award honoree. This award named after legendary NFL coach Don Shula is for their ” character, integrity, leadership, dedication to the community, commitment to player protection and on-field success” according to the NFL’s website.

    Allen has completed his 37th season and has a career record of 376-78. He’s ranked fourth overall in wins in Texas.

    Biography

    Chapman’s teams at Garden City have established a standard of excellence during her 14 seasons as head coach. This year’s team finished 19-0 and dethroned two-time defending state champion Setauket Ward-Melville High en route to the state title, her fourth at the school.

    Chapman has led Garden City to a 224-21-21 record and state championships in 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2005. She was named Coach of the Year by Newsday, and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association named her its North Region Coach of the Year.

    Since being honored in 2006, Chapman continued to lead Garden City to success. Garden City won another two state titles in 2008 and 2018. Garden City also finished as State Runner Ups six times (2007, 2010, 2011, 2014-2016).

    In 2013, Chapman was presented by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce as their Community Achievement Award.

    On October 12, 2015, Chapman won her 400th game with an 8-0 victory over Oyster Bay.

    Scott Salow

    Salow has made Homer into one of the most dominant teams during his tenure, succeeding both on and off the diamond.

    Biography

    In the past two years, Salow’s teams have put this small school- just 334 students- in south central Michigan on the national high school sports map. After going 38-0 and winning the Division 3 state title in 2004, Homer went on to win its first 37 games in 2005, putting together a 75-game winning streak that broke a 40-year state record and also set a national high school record.

    The previous record of 70 consecutive victories, set by Albuquerque (N.M.) La Cueva High and last year’s NHSCA National High School Coach of the Year, Stan McKeever, had lasted just two months. Saginaw Nouvel Catholic High ended Homer’s streak in the state finals.

    The head coach at Homer the past five seasons, Salow entered this season with a record of 147-19. He was named Division 3 Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Coaches Association and District 4 Coach of the Year by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association.

    Since being honored in 2006, Salow still leads the Trojans.  Most recently, in 2019, the team made it to the state semi- finals before suffering their third loss of the season. In addition, Homer set a state record for the lowest ERA allowed by a team’s  pitching staff in one season with an impressive 0.78.

    Jeff Griffith

    Griffith has led Cactus to multiple state championships throughout his career.

    Biography

    Griffith has built a powerhouse in the Phoenix area during his 23 years as head coach. Entering this season, his teams at Cactus have an overall record of 479-161-7 and won five Class 4A state titles, in 1987, 1989, 1994, 2003 and 2004.

    Cactus also finished as the state runner-up in 1988, 1995 and 2002 and has won 13 region titles. After bowing out in the region final a year ago, this year’s team, led by the nation’s top senior catcher, Stacie Chambers, is ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) High School Top 25.

    Griffith was also named the 2004 NHSCA Softball Coach of the Year. Griffith ‘s Cobras now have back-to-back Class 4A state titles after a perfect 38-0 season this year.

    After 23 years Griffith retired in 2006 leaving quite the legacy.

    That being said, Griffith couldn’t stay away for too long and came out of retirement. He took a position at Paradise Valley Junior College. In 2011, Griffith went back to Cactus as the assistant coach.
