“Every time you dogpile on the field at the end of the year is a great feeling.” -Joey Gallo

    Biography

Considered the top senior corner infield prospect by ESPN Rise, the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Gallo leads the nation with 20 home runs and 79 RBIs, according to MaxPreps.com.

He has led six-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman to a 37-3 record this spring. The left-handed hitter is batting .519 with 63 runs scored, eight doubles and 12 stolen bases, and has gone hit-less in just seven games.

Gallo has signed with Louisiana State University, but he is projected to be a first-round selection in the upcoming Major League Draft. His power potential is being compared to another Las Vegas product, 2010 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Harper, now starting for the Washington Nationals.

Last spring, Gallo batted .471 with 25 home runs, 79 RBIs and 64 runs scored, and was named to the High School All-America second team by Baseball America. Last summer, in the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park in San Diego, Gallo hit a 442-foot home run into the center-field bleachers, the 10th-longest home run hit in the park’s history. In February, he had two hits in three at-bats in a scrimmage against Lucas Giolito of Westlake Village (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake School, who is projected to be the top overall pick.

Gallo was a starter on the USA Baseball Under-18 National Team that went 9-0 to win the Pan-American Championships at Cartagena, Colombia, outscoring its opponents by an 88-8 margin.

After graduation, Gallo was selected as the 39th pick overall in the MLB Draft. He forwent LSU and signed with the Texas Rangers. After three years in the minor leagues, Gallo was called up to the Majors on June 1, 2015 and played a handful of games before going back down.

In 2017, Gallo played the entire season in the Majors for the Rangers in multiple positions. On May 8, 2019, he hit his 100th homerun where he became the quickest player to do so in only 377 games. On May 31, 2019, Gallo hit another new marker in his career, his first career grand slam. Later in the season, Gallo was selected to be part of the American League All Star team.

Bundy was a top prospect in high school and has had a long career in the Major Leagues.

    Biography

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder is projected as a pitcher as a professional, but the switch-hitting Bundy was named Second-Team All-America by Baseball America as a junior at two positions: utility player and pitcher.

The right-handed hurler posted a record of 11-1 as a junior with a 1.58 ERA. In 80 innings, he struck out 164, while walking just 20 and allowing 41 hits. He also batted .442 with 16 doubles and seven home runs, driving in 51 runs and scoring 50.

This spring, Bundy, who was clocked at 100 miles per hour four times in one start alone, has exceeded those numbers and led Owasso, the 6A state champions three straight seasons from 2007-09, to a No. 1 national ranking by several publications and the state title game. Through May 6, Bundy was 10-0 with a 0.22 ERA, with 147 strikeouts and just five walks, 18 hits and two earned runs allowed in 64 innings.

A workout warrior who squats 500 pounds and leg-presses 1,200 pounds, Bundy has signed with the University of Texas, but is projected to be selected in the top half of the first round in the upcoming Major League draft. His brother, Bobby, was an eighth-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles in 2008 and is progressing through their system.

Bundy did just that. He was the fourth overall pick at the 2011 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He was sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery and then with calcification of the shoulder. He made his appearance in the spring of 2016. He was placed on the disabled list in 2019 after a bout with tendinitis in the knee.

In December of 2019, Bundy was traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

    Biography

Ambidextrous since birth, the 6-foot-1 185-pounder is projected as an outfielder as a professional, but Vettleson is a rarity at any level: a switch-pitcher. He has been clocked at 93 miles per hour as a right-handed pitcher and 88 miles per hour as a lefty. The Gatorade Washington Player of the Year as a junior, Vettleson owned a career 6-3 record, 2.10 earned-run average and 64 strikeouts in 57 innings entering this year, as well as a .408 career batting average with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was named Player of the Year this spring by the Tacoma News-Tribune.

Vettleson hit two grand slams in a game against Tacoma Stadium High earlier this year, then struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 7-1 victory over Puyallup Emerald Ridge High that propelled the Cougars to a fourth straight state tournament berth. Rated No. 19 in Baseball America’s pre-season Top 100, Vettleson, committed to Oregon State University, should be selected in the first two rounds of the upcoming Major League draft.

Vettleson was indeed drafted in the first round as the 42nd overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays.

    Biography

The 6-foot-2, 167-pound left-handed pitcher turned the high school baseball world upside down this spring when he set a state record by pitching four consecutive no-hitters. The previous record had stood for 22 years. In his record-breaking fourth straight no-hitter on April 20, he struck out 17 in a 5-0 victory over Dade City Pasco High, mixing a 90-plus fastball with curve balls and sliders. In his four no-hitters Schuster struck out 60, while issuing only seven walks. Schuster finished 8-1 this season with a 0.93 earned-run average, striking out 115 and allowing just 16 hits in 60 innings. A 29-inning hitless streak ended when he yielded a third-inning double in a 9-4 loss to Tampa Gaither High in the state playoffs. Schuster also was an offensive threat, batting .403 with 21 RBIs and 21 runs scored. As a junior, he posted a 5-2 record and a 1.07 ERA. He will attend the University of Florida.

Instead of college, Schuster was drafted in the 13th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was then traded to the Oakland A’s, where he made his MLB debut July 5, 2016.

    Impact Statement

Schultz retired after 43 years, 11 State titles and is the winningest baseball coach in the nation.

    Biography

The nation’s all-time leading winner with a 1,675-353-1 record, Schultz, 65, begins his 43rd season in the dugout this summer for Kee, a consolidation of Lansing and New Albin schools with an enrollment of just 155 students in grades 9-12.

The native of Winona, Minn., an All-State football and basketball player, turned down a $2,000 bonus offer from the Washington Senators to attend college, eventually graduating from Winona State University. Schultz inherited a meager 10-game baseball schedule, which he quickly expanded to a 40-game slate. Schultz guided the Kee Hawks to the first of 11 state titles in 1973.

That team, which finished 47-0, is one of just 10 Iowa teams to complete an unbeaten season. Schultz is one of just four Iowa coaches to lead four consecutive state title teams (1989-92), a run that included a 59-game winning streak. His teams also won summer state titles in 1980, 1981, 1986 and 2005 and fall titles in 1977 and 1978, and finished second in state nine times, most recently last summer. That finish earned Schultz Class A Northeast District Coach of the Year honors from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, which inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2006.

The National Federation of State High School Associations honored him as its National Coach of the Year in 2003. Schultz also was Kee’s boys basketball coach for 37 years, compiling a 367-389 record.

After being honored, Schultz coached for another two years before retiring after the 2014 season. With 45 years under his belt, he boasts 11 State Championships, 9 summer titles and 2 fall titles. He finishes with 1,754 victories and 398 defeats.
