Impact Statement

Skipworth played other positions but he emerged as the nation’s No. 1 catching prospect in 2008.

Biography

After playing left field and first base earlier in his high school career, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Skipworth has emerged as the nation’s No. 1 catching prospect. Earlier this season he set a national record with 18 consecutive hits and a state record by reaching base in 25 straight at-bats.

Through his team’s first 26 games, Skipworth was batting .580 with 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, 49 runs scored, 11 intentional walks and a .660 on-base percentage. He batted .407 with eight home runs as a junior – 23 of his 35 hits going for extra bases.  He also had a 6-for-6 game as a sophomore, when he hit .355 with 11 extra-base hits and a team-high 24 RBIs. Only four opposing baserunners have tried to steal against him this spring, and only one has been successful.

Also an outstanding student with a 3.8 grade-point average, Skipworth is committed to Arizona State University, but is projected to be a top five selection in the upcoming Major League Baseball amateur draft.

Skipworth was drafted as the sixth overall pick at the 2008 amateur MLB draft by the Florida Marlins.
