Impact Statement

Kavan, who won eight state titles, went on to the University of South Dakota. She is the first in the school’s history to place at the Division I Conference Championships.

Biography

Perhaps the finest distance runner ever produced by the state of South Dakota, Kavan set course records in the Class A state meet as a senior, the Eastern South Dakota Championships, the USA Track and Field (USATF) Dakotas Association Championships and the USATF Regionals, and finished sixth in the Foot Locker National Championships after winning the Midwest Regional qualifying meet. The three-time state champion was twice voted Female Athlete of the Year by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association and also won all three distance races in the state track meet. She will attend the University of Notre Dame.

While at Notre Dame her freshman year, she had an eighth place finish at the Big East Conference. Kavan transferred to the University of South Dakota to finish the remainder of her college career.

As a USD Coyote, Kavan wrote history. She was a four time NCAA Division II All American. She was also the first to place first at the Division I Conference. She finished with a total of six individual conference titles in outdoor and indoor competition her Junior and Senior year.
