“I’m a strong believer that amateur athletics are the backbone of our country. When guys come back and say ‘thanks’ – that’s the reward of coaching.” – J.T. Curtis
Biography
J.T. Curtis is the 2013 National High School Coaches Association’s National High School Football Coach of the Year after leading the school, founded by his father John, to its 25th Louisiana high school football championship in 2012. The Patriots also were crowned “mythical” national champs by multiple national media outlets.
Since taking over the John Curtis program, Curtis has become America’s second winningest coach with 520 victories. 2009 NHSCA National Football Coach of the Year John McKissick of Summerville High School in South Carolina is the all-time leader with 601 victories. Coach Curtis’ record is 520-54-6. The amazing thing about his record is that Curtis’ first team in 1969 didn’t win a game going 0-10.
Since being honored, Curtis continues to lead the Patriots to success. The team won an additional state title in 2018 and was the runners-up in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, the Pats also made appearances in 2016 and 2019, both year’s suffering a defeat in the semifinals.
In 2017 Curtis was inducted into the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame.
After the 2019 season Curtis jumped to the second most winningest coach in the nation and just four victories shy of the 600- win club with a career record of 592-66-6. He will be entering his 52nd season in the fall of 2020.
