Impact Statement

Paulus was a multiple sport athlete who had success on the football field and the basketball court in high school and college.

Biography

Paulus had a season – and a career – for the ages. The quarterback led Christian Brothers Academy to a 13-0 record and its first-ever Class AA state title, passing for 376 yards and three touchdowns and earning MVP honors as he rallied his team past New Rochelle High, 41-35 in the title game.

As a senior he completed 65.5 per cent of his passes for 3,677 yards, breaking his own state record, and 43 touchdowns, just short of his own state record of 45 as a junior. His 11,760 career passing yards, 152 career touchdown passes and 543 passing yards in one game also are state records. However, the 6-foot-3 Paulus, who sports a 92 per cent average in the classroom, will play basketball in college instead, joining NHSCA Boys Basketball Player of the Year Josh McRoberts in Duke University’s freshman class.

Paulus did attend and played basketball for Duke under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski from 2005 until 2009.  As Paulus stated, “Basketball has always been my first love. Second, I want to be the point guard at Duke. I don’t want any obstacle to get in my way of that, even if that means giving up football.”

Upon graduation, still with a year of eligibility, Paulus enrolled at Syracuse and was voted as team captain. Paulus completed 193 passes out of 285, which set the single season record in the school’s history.

Paulus entered the coaching realm after graduation. After being an assistant at Navy, Ohio State, Louisville, and George Washington. In the fall of 2019, Paulus was hired as the Interim Head Coach at Niagara University.
