Biography
“Athletes like Alan Webb are among the success stories produced in high school athletics today,” NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. “He has worked extremely hard to develop his skills and has become one of the best track athletes not only in the state of Virginia, but the entire nation, and we are proud to be honoring him.”
In January, Webb, who will attend the University of Michigan, became just the fourth runner in American high school history to run a sub-four-minute mile, in 3:59.86 at the New Balance Games in New York. It was the U.S. indoor boys record. Webb became the first American high school runner to do so since Marty Liquori in 1967. He also set the Virginia Class AAA indoor record for the 1,000-meter run.
At the Penn Relays this spring, Webb anchored South Lakes High’s 4X800 meter relay team and distance medley relay teams to victory. Running the anchor leg of the 4X800, Webb’s time of 1:49.1 was the fastest in the meet’s 107-year history. The medley relay team’s time of 9:58.66 also was a meet record and the sixth-fastest time ever recorded by an American high school team.
